It requires more growth in our mindset and changes in our leadership way of being and practices. The role of leader of leaders moves an individual even further away from the doing of the work into the more complex and ambiguous world of shaping and coordinating business outcomes entirely through engaging the imaginations, mindsets and way of being of others.
Despite many people thinking that more senior leadership roles come with more power and so are easier, the experience of people transitioning into these roles is that it feels like you have a lot less control. The line between action and outcomes goes from being clear and obvious to being vague, messy and complex. This is because now the individual is almost totally reliant on other people to get things done. They are now in the role where they are designing and shaping the system of work. It is quite a step up from being a front-line leader.
